The Estrobolome: The Connection Between Your Hormones & Gut Health

When you think about the right foods to eat for your body, do you think about how it impacts your hormones?

Specifically estrogen?

Research now tells us that what we eat significantly impacts our gut microbiome which in turn, either helps balance our hormones, or completely throw them off.

The estrobolome contains bacterial genes whose products are capable of metabolizing estrogens. In other words, this bacteria is essential for your body to break down & utilize estrogen the right way.

Unfortunately, eating a diet high in processed foods, refined carbs, & added sugars will lead to imbalances in gut bacteria. This will begin a cascade effect often leading to estrogen dominance since it downregulates the enzymes needed to break estrogen down.

Microbes in the estrobolome produce beta-glucuronidase. This enzyme alters estrogens into their active forms, which can bind to estrogen receptors. In general, the more beta-glucuronidase that the microbes in your gut produce, the less estrogen is excreted out of the body leading to estrogen dominance.

Some common conditions are thought to be a result of this process:

🌺Polycystic ovary syndrome
🌺Various forms of cancer
🌺Endometriosis
🌺Estrogen Dominance
🌺Mast Cell Activation Disorder

Whats are the first few steps in reversing these conditions?

🌺Elimination diet - no soy, corn, canola oil, dairy, gluten, safflower oil
🌺Add Cruciferous vegetables - Broccoli, Collards, Brussel sprouts etc., Resveratrol, Citrus foods
🌺Try supplementating with Calcium D-gluarate which suppresses beta-glucuronidase

Stay tuned for more on the gut-hormone connection!
