Gut/Thyroid/Immune Connection
Have you heard of the Gut Thyroid Connection?
Did you know eating a poor diet can lead to hypothyroidism which can lead to Hashimoto's disease?
Your thyroid is the dial on your metabolism 🔥. When you turn down the dial on your metabolism, this can lead to an even more inflamed gut because it slows down the conversion of T4 to T3. T4 is the inactive form and T3 is the active form your thyroid can use in order to support all of the metabolic processes of the body.
When our body's are inflamed and we have cortisol running high, 😖this also suppresses active T3 while increasing inactive T3.
See the multiple connections yet? One effects the other as they are in constant communication and working to adapt to each other to maintain homeostasis.
We also know our gut contains 70% or more of immune tissue 🤒in the body, known as GALT- Gut-Associated Lymphoid Tissue. This part of your immune system hosts immune cells including T & B lymphocytes which is where we produce antibodies against antigens (bacteria & viruses).
When you have leaky gut, toxic ☠️ substances (LPS) can pass into the bloodstream which trigger the immune system to start attacking whatever it is encountering. When your immune system is constantly being triggered because of leaky gut, it starts to build antibodies to your own tissues- most frequently this is the thyroid. This is how Hashimotos develops.
LPS also negatively impacts the thyroid by:
✔️Dulling hormone receptor sites
✔️Increases the amount of inactive T3
✔️Decreases TSH
✔️Promote autoimmune thyroid disease (AITD)
Stay tuned! Tomorrow I'll be posting on how to heal the Gut/Thyroid Axis!
