Histamine Hangover Remedies
I hope you have been enjoying the holidays guilt-free but I also know from experience that can come with a price, especially when dealing with histamine intolerance. Good news is I have some tried and true tricks up my sleeve that can help ease that histamine hangover you may be feeling.
Before I get into those though, really the best cure is prevention, since we know we have a limit as to how full our histamine bucket can get. Once it overflows, it can cause side effects for days, so preparing prior to the indulgence is key.
This means staying super hydrated, being extra strict to avoid all of your histamine triggers whether that's food, alcohol, perfumes...etc. I'm also a big fan of drinking teas to support the liver like dandelion root or burdock root tea, in addition to blood cleansing herbs like sarsaparilla and red clover root. Make sure to prioritize lots of sleep to support the detoxification process.
While indulging, try to know your limit and stick to it otherwise you know you will be paying for it later. Keep alcohol to a minimum and if you must drink, try a lower alcohol, low sugar drink like dry farm wine or high quality vodka. Don't use mixers or drinks with artificial ingredients. Choose your appetizers wisely as this can be a hot bed for histamines, so try to avoid deli meats and cheeses and instead bring your own gluten free crackers and have some dips which are a safer option. Lastly, make sure to consume a DAO enzyme or two to help your body break down the excess histamine (this can be a life saver in a pinch!)
Ok now what to do after the hangover has set it! Here's a list of all potential remedies you could try and more than likely you won't need all of them so pick a few that seem easiest for you!
Epsom salt bath. This would be ideal to do the same night as the indulgence but can easily be done the next day. Flooding your body with magnesium will help the detox process and calming your nervous system down since histamine can be very stimulating to the brain.
Castor oil packs over the liver. When we're talking about histamine issues, we want to give lots of love to our liver and castor oil packs are at the top of the list when it comes to easing our toxic burden, as well as supporting detoxification. Try it for 1-2 hours with a heat source like an infrared heating pad or hot water bottle for the ultimate relaxation treatment.
Make a low histamine juice recipe with dandelion greens, cucumber, fennel, green apple, lemon, ginger, and parsley. This will be easy on digestion and highly anti-inflammatory to help bring at symptoms you're feeling down quickly. Make sure to always use organic ingredients with any juices to avoid pesticides and herbicides which are a big trigger for histamine issues.
For some, herbal blends of quercetin, bromelain, stinging nettles and turmeric can be helpful to stabilize mast cells which help to clear the blood of excess histamine.
Have a cup of manjistha tea. This has literally cured me of severe herx reactions and a key component I use with my histamine clients to help prevent detox reactions. It's actual magic. Start with 1/4 tsp and pour filtered hot water over. Can increase over time to 1 tsp.
For your meals, stick to things you know are safe and you tolerate really well. Don't overeat and make sure to take digestive enzymes.
If you need more sleep, then sleep! This is when our body's detox so make sure you haven't overbooked yourself for the day after a big cheat meal.
Try a coffee enema. This is one of the fastest and most effective ways to bring down inflammation asap while giving your liver a big boost of glutathione to help your body detox. Make sure to always use organic coffee and filtered water.
Wishing you a joyful rest of the holiday season! Cheers!
